Background

  • Location Beirut, Lebanon
  • Engineer ARUP, Rafik El-Khoury and Partners
  • Architect Nabil Gholam Architects
  • Contractor Arabian Construction Company (ACC)

In the heart of Beirut’s central district and on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea is the residential high-rise The Platinum Tower.  At 153 metres (501 feet) tall, this prestigious project is the tallest skyscraper in Lebanon.

The aim in designing The Platinum Tower was to provide the highest standards of building systems using the latest technologies and materials, complying with ASTM International standards and International Building Codes.

Solution

Having experienced firsthand the expertise of the T.A. Group on construction solutions, the main contractor decided once again to consult with them on this prestigious project. The recommendation from the T.A. Group was a traditional mortar rendering modified with Kryton’s Krystol Mortar Admixture (KMA) and synthetic fiber reinforcement.

KMA is a specially designed chemical admixture for cementitious mortar that contains Kryton’s unique Krystol technology. KMA offered numerous benefits to the contractor including:

  • Improved workability of the mortar mix
  • Reduced permeability and water absorption of mortar renderings
  • Less shrinkage and cracking

Reports on samples tested for water permeability, compressive strength, set time, and adhesion proved that adding KMA and the fiber reinforcement to the mortar greatly improves the application and performance properties.  T.A. Group supplied the materials needed to accomplish the plastering of the whole 36 stories, a total of 9,500 kg (20, 944 lbs) of KMA.
