Big Multinational Supermarket

A big multinational supermarket chain hired a Greek engineering firm to work on two local projects simultaneously and needed a waterproofing system to give them an unparalleled level of protection.  The company had been contracted to build a new public power company substation located on land with particularly high groundwater. They also needed to renovate an existing underground parking garage, building a new concrete elevator sump pit. The existing walls of the garage had never been waterproofed and as a result, were filled with mold and moisture due to direct contact with the backfill. The underground floor was partially built with concrete and bricks in a method that was common in past decades in Greece but is disastrous when it comes to long-term waterproofing. Both projects required a comprehensive waterproofing solution.

Solution

ALTO S.A., Kryton’s distributor in the area, was contacted by the client’s team to remedy the mold and leakage in the garage and put a long term solution in place for both projects. Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) was incorporated into approximately 200 cubic meters (260 square yards) of concrete used in both the elevator sump pit at the garage and public power company’s substation walls. At the garage ALTO S.A. also waterproofed wall to floor joints, used Kryton’s Crack Repair System to fix existing cracks and added Krystol Mortar Admixture to the plaster used for the underground floor.

By using Kryton’s products the engineer was able to:

• Streamline the construction process on two simultaneous projects
• Save money by eliminating the need for external membranes
• Increase the quality and longevity of the concrete through reduced shrinking and cracking
• Ensure comprehensive waterproofing at the garage by waterproofing from the inside out with an internal waterproofing system rather than an external waterproofing system
