Local businesses work together to build affordable housing with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and their Partner Families.
Vancouver, BC – June 13th, 2013 On May 2nd, 2013, a dedicated group of 13 employees from Kryton International Inc. headed out to Burnaby. Together, they rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time and expertise to a Habitat for Humanity townhouse project. This six-unit townhouse project will house six families, who would not be eligible for home-ownership in Greater Vancouver’s competitive housing market. Each family will commit to 500 hours of volunteer work, either in a Habitat for Humanity ReStore or towards building other Habitat Homes in the community, as well as pay a no-interest mortgage, tailored to 30% of their income.
“When you participate in a Build Day with Habitat for Humanity, you’re not just building houses – you are providing an opportunity for hardworking people within a community.” says Kryton’s President and CEO Kari Yuers. “When housing prices in the Vancouver area are as high as they are, too many families are forced to live paycheck to paycheck. What Habitat is doing, is giving them an opportunity to get ahead, and we at Kryton are very proud to be a part of it.”
Kryton will continue the partnership with Habitat for Humanity, by providing a permanent waterproofing system to the concrete foundation of the next build site. BC Housing is transferring a property at a significant discount, located at 8180 Ash St. in Richmond, to Habitat for Humanity Society of Greater Vancouver. Here, six more families will have the opportunity to become first-time home owners under the Habitat for Humanity program. In addition to the homeowners, each home will include a rental suite offering mortgage assistance to the homeowners and adding to the number of affordable rental units in Richmond.
“It is fabulous to have companies, like the Kryton team, contribute their time to participate in our townhouse project. Corporate partnerships and their donation of time, product and funds play a critical role in the development of our projects not only locally, but internationally as well.” says Stephani Samaridis (Director, Fund Development) for Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver.
