Santa Lucia Riverwalk

The Canal Santa Lucia is a 2.5 km (1.5 mile) long 1.2 m deep artificial river in the heart of Monterrey, Mexico. The canal is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Monterrey and features fountains, bridges, murals and restaurants along the waterway.

When constructing the second phase of the canal that would connect Felix U Gomez Ave to where the project ends at Fundidora Park the team needed a reliable waterproofing solution. The second phase was built on contaminated ground. Due to past mini activity there was still a strong presence of heavy metals in the ground water, which could not be allowed to enter in the canal.

Solution

The project’s engineer had worked with Kryton’s concrete waterproofing products in the past and recommended Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) Concrete Waterproofing Admixture for the job.

27 tons (54,000 lb.) of KIM was added to the concrete canal to provide a watertight seal. The contractor had this to say “The KIM concrete flows much better than we expected. The placers and finishers noted the differences. Four years after the project completion, no significant leaks arouse and everybody is more than happy with Kryton solution.”

By foot or by boat the canal is a popular destination for tourists and locals.
