Cemex is a global leader in building materials, known for providing high-quality products and reliable services worldwide. In the US, Cemex operates 10 cement plants, around 50 cement terminals, nearly 50 aggregate quarries, and over 280 ready-mix concrete plants. Among its numerous facilities, the silos used to store cement for northwestern Florida are crucial for the regional supply chain.
The cement silos in Tampa, built in the 1960s and located near the water, were showing signs of significant deterioration due to water ingress. This not only compromised the structural integrity of the silos but also posed a safety hazard to the workers operating in the vicinity.
Roman Builders, led by Lance DiBona, was commissioned to undertake the repair and restoration of the silos. The team selected Krystol Repair Grout and Krystol T1 for the project due to their advanced waterproofing capabilities.
The repair work involved:
• Structural Repair: Krystol Repair Grout was used to fill cracks and repair the damaged concrete. This grout utilizes Kryton’s crystalline technology,
which leverages unhydrated cement particles to form microscopic crystals that fill and seal any gaps in the concrete.
• Waterproofing Treatment: Krystol T1 was applied to the silo surfaces. This surface-applied crystalline treatment ensures permanent waterproofing by penetrating deep into the concrete to create a durable barrier against water ingress.
