GFL Environmental owns and operates material recovery facilities across North America, utilizing a range of state-of-the-art technologies to sort and process recyclable materials. For the new loading bay construction at their Kelowna facility, the project involved building concrete aprons and floor slabs designed to withstand the harsh conditions of a waste collection facility. With heavy equipment in operation daily, the project required a solution capable of enduring high levels of abrasion and erosion over time.
The project faced the challenge of building durable concrete slabs in a highly abrasive and erosive environment. Daily activities such as loading, unloading, scraping, and power washing, combined with the use of heavy-duty equipment, created significant wear on the concrete surfaces.
Kryton’s Hard-Cem was chosen to enhance the durability of the concrete in these loading bays. Hard-Cem’s ability to increase abrasion and erosion resistance made it the ideal solution for withstanding the harsh conditions faced in this facility. By integrating Hard-Cem into the concrete mix, the construction team ensured long-lasting performance without the need for surface-applied hardeners.
Although a relatively small project, the use of Hard-Cem played a critical role in extending the lifespan of the concrete loading bays by providing superior resistance to daily wear and tear. The concrete will remain durable under the intense conditions of the waste collection process, contributing to the overall efficiency and sustainability of the GFL Environmental facility.
