Background

From an indoor skiing and snowboarding facility to the world’s tallest building, the construction landscape in Dubai has always been pushing the limits of the built environment. It has attracted millions of tourists from all over the world, and to maintain that global attraction, Dubai set its sights on creating a theme park that would rival those of Disney and Universal. That led to the creation of the MOTIONGATE Dubai theme park. Covering a little under 185,806 m2 (2 million ft2), it offers a variety of entertainment experiences with rollercoasters, theaters, restaurants, and more alongside movie themes and characters from DreamWorks Animation, Lionsgate, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures.

For such an extensive theme park to be built, there needed to be significant construction work, which made the building schedule and maintenance plans much more crucial. That was especially true for the park’s lagoon, water reservoirs, and canal, which is over 1 km (0.6 mi) long. All of which weave throughout the extravagant park. To lower the maintenance of these scenic watery locations, shorten their construction schedules, and increase their life span, the construction team knew they’d need the right waterproofing solution.

Solution

All of the waterproofing stakeholders in the project determined that Kryton’s waterproofing system would be that right solution as it was able to reduce potential maintenance and repair work for the rest of the park’s service life. As a result, the construction team applied KIM to the park’s lagoon and water reservoirs.

They also went on to add KIM to the shotcrete and concrete mixes for the park’s canal. That would ensure these areas were watertight and help streamline the project’s timeline as the construction team no longer needed to apply a surface-applied membrane or liner. That in turn allowed the contractor for the project to improve site productivity and reduce safety issues without compromising the quality of the work.

To give the canal additional protection, the construction team applied Kryton’s Krystol Waterstop Grout and Krystol Waterstop Treatment to the canal’s construction joints, control joints, and details.

When concerns about the maintenance were voiced, Kryton’s distributor in Dubai, Crystalline Water Proofing Trading L.L.C., provided a twenty-year warranty that lowered the potential liability risk for the owner, which no other company could match.
