In the hopes of conducting an effective concrete repair and rejuvenation test at the Styldrift Mine in Rustenburg, South Africa, Murray & Roberts got in touch with Sanika Waterproofing Specialists. They wanted the specialists to survey a concrete water containment structure in the area.
In return, they received an intensive site survey, which provided plenty of insight into the structure’s state at the time. The specialists noted that there was excessive movement between the pipe penetration of the structure and the surrounding concrete. And they determined that it was likely the cause for the structure’s cracks, spalling, and water ingress.
All of which made the water containment structure costly to hold on to, forcing the Styldrift Mine to spend unnecessary time and money to fix and maintain it.
As the approved applicators for Kryton’s Smart Concrete® solutions in South Africa, Sanika Waterproofing Specialists were tasked with repairing the structure. Luckily, they had plenty of experience working with Kryton’s Krystol Leak Repair System. They knew that it would permanently repair and waterproof the mine’s water containment structure.
With that in mind, they successfully applied the system to the exterior wall surface of the container surrounding the pipe penetration and honeycombed area. That gave the concrete Krystol® technology, imbuing it with the ability to react to water chemically to block it out and to self-seal cracks.
In the end, the exterior wall of the water containment structure showed no leaks, satisfying Styldrift Mine that the structure would be able to safely hold water once more.
